Electricity is the major source of power for a country’s most of the economic activities. In modern world, standard of living sometimes measured in terms of per capita electricity consumption. As in July 2012, Bangladesh has an installed electricity generation capacity of 8.1 GW; around 75% of this capacity is considered to be ‘available’ for use. Only 40% of the population of Bangladesh has access to electricity[I]. Problems in the electric power sector of Bangladesh include corruption in administration, high system losses and delays in completion of new plants, low plant efficiencies, erratic power supply, electricity theft, blackouts and shortages of funds for power plant maintenance. On the whole, the country’s generation plants have been unable to meet system demand over the past decades.Presently, total generation capacity is 8315 MW. Of this capacity 4544 MW is from public sector and 3771 MW is from the private sector, which is 55% and 45% respectively of the total generation capacity. Considering 15 -25% maintenance and forced outage, available generation capacity is in the range of 6200-7100MW without fuel constraint [1-2].In the FY 2012-13 maximum generation was 6,350 MW (August 4, 2012). A. Ready Made Garments (RMG) Industries of Bangladesh Being the biggest contributor to the country’s foreign exchange(around 76 percent) and GDP (around 13 percent), employing over 2.2 million people, the importance of nurturing a sector as vibrant and thriving as the garments industry, could not be emphasized enough. With export of readymade garments reaching 15 billion in 2010 and predictions of it rising to 19 billion or more in the next two years, it is obvious that the industry is growing at an exponential speed (with 12% average annual growth rates). Greater demand for our garments abroad indicates the improvement in quality of the products as well as greater customer confidence, which translates to further expansion of the industry, more employment, more consumers in the domestic market and a huge boost to the economy [3-4]. Energy consumption in a typical RMG factory is predominantly in sewing operations. So, we see, if a scheme can be taken to improve the efficiency of the sewing machines, lot of energy can be saved scheme has been developed to reduce the no-load losses of the industrial sewing machine motors used in Ready Made Garments (RMG) industries. The switching arrangement of the machine is such that the supply voltage of the motor is partially dropped across a reactive device which is a capacitor connected in series with the motor while the motor is running at no-load. This reduced voltage to the motor reduces the no-load loss significantly. During load condition the switching mechanism of the motor replaces the reactive component by a wire connection and allows full power to the load. The validity of this mechanism is verified by simulation programs and results are tabulated with proper comparison. It is evident that the use of this motor controller reduces no-load loss of the sewing machines substantially and under load condition the controller improves efficiency of the machines.
